Why people still order fruit cake in Harare

The cake that holds the room together.

Rich fruit cake is the cake the elders look for at the table. It is the cake the bride's grandmother knows, the cake that travels through Harare traffic without softening, and the cake that traditionally goes home with the couple to keep for the first anniversary. The flavour is built up over weeks of brandy feeding, and a slice tastes of more than its ingredients.

We bake fruit cakes for weddings, for Roora Day, for milestone anniversaries, for Christmas tables, and for customers who simply prefer it to a sponge. Rich fruit and light fruit are both available, and a single order can mix tiers (rich fruit on the bottom for the elders and to take home, sponge or light fruit on the top for the younger guests).

Rich fruit wedding details

Rich fruit holds beautifully as a wedding cake in Harare's climate. It doesn't need refrigeration to look right at the venue, the dense crumb portions twice as well per inch as a sponge, and the top tier traditionally goes home with the couple as a brandy-fed keepsake.

Wedding fruit-cake tiers follow the standard wedding price guide:

  • 2 tier  ·  from $200  ·  for 30-60 guests
  • 3 tier  ·  from $300  ·  for 60-120 guests · most-booked
  • 4 tier  ·  from $400  ·  for 120-180 guests
  • 5 tier  ·  from $500  ·  for 180+ guests

Mixed-flavour wedding pairings

A common Harare order is rich fruit on the base tier (for the elders, and to take home) with one or two sponge or light-fruit tiers above (for the younger guests).

Pair rich fruit with vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, marble, or lemon, we design the cake from the start to read as one design, not two. The pricing is the standard tier price; the flavour mix is included.

Roora Day note: rich fruit pairs especially well as the base tier of a Roora Day cake, both for the cultural fit and because the cake will be cut and shared with the elders. See Roora Day cakes →

Two fruit cakes, two reasons

Rich fruit or light fruit?

Traditional · Most-ordered

Rich fruit cake

Dense, dark, brandy-fed. Packed with raisins, currants, sultanas, glacé cherries, mixed peel, and chopped nuts. The traditional Christmas, Roora, and wedding cake. Holds for months. Ages beautifully. Travels well in Harare's heat. From $50.

Best for: wedding tiers, Roora Day, milestone anniversaries, gifting, Christmas, the elders at the table.

Lighter · Sweeter

Light fruit cake

A higher proportion of sponge to fruit, paler colour, sweeter and softer crumb. Tastes closer to a celebration sponge with fruit through it. Doesn't need brandy-feeding, doesn't keep as long, but suits guests who find rich fruit too dense. Same size pricing as rich fruit.

Best for: celebrations with mixed-age guests, customers new to fruit cake, the upper tier of a mixed-flavour wedding cake.

When fruit cake is the right call

Five briefs we hear most.

Wedding base tier

Rich fruit on the bottom of a tiered wedding cake, sponge above. The elders get fruit, the younger guests get sponge, the top tier goes home for the first anniversary.

Roora Day cake

Single-tier rich fruit, decorated to the family palette, delivered to the bride's family home for the ceremony. Holds through a long ceremony day in any weather.

Milestone anniversary

For 25th, 40th, 50th anniversaries with extended family. A small rich fruit tier nods to the original wedding cake; a sponge tier above suits the grandchildren.

Christmas table

The cake the family expects at the December table. We start brandy-feeding from October so the December cake is at its full flavour. Order by mid-November for Christmas.

Diaspora gifting

Rich fruit travels in cabin luggage and holds for weeks. Customers regularly order fruit cakes to send with travelling family to the UK, US, or South Africa.

Quiet keepsake

A small 6-inch rich fruit cake, simply finished, for an anniversary at home or to mark a quieter milestone. Beautiful with one sugar flower and a sprig of greenery.

Fruit cake FAQ

Common questions.

How much does a fruit cake cost in Harare?
Rich fruit starts at $50 (small), $65 medium, $80 large, $120 xtra large. Wedding fruit-cake tiers follow the standard wedding price guide: $200 (2-tier), $300 (3-tier), $400 (4-tier), $500 (5-tier). Light fruit is priced on the same scale. Full price guide →
What's the difference between rich fruit and light fruit?
Rich fruit is dense, dark, brandy-fed, and packed with dried fruit. Light fruit uses a higher proportion of sponge to fruit, gives a paler crumb, and is softer and sweeter. Rich fruit ages and travels better; light fruit lands closer to a sponge cake in feel and is gentler on the palate.
How far ahead should I order?
One week minimum for a single-tier. Three weeks for a two-tier. Six to eight weeks for a wedding fruit cake we can brandy-feed properly. Last-minute orders sometimes work for the small sizes, message us and we will be honest about what's possible.
How long will the cake keep?
A properly brandy-fed rich fruit cake will keep at room temperature for several weeks and will hold in a sealed container at the back of a cupboard for months, this is why the top tier of a wedding fruit cake is traditionally kept for the first anniversary. Light fruit doesn't hold as long; treat it like a sponge.
Can the cake be made without alcohol?
Yes. We can brush the fruit with a non-alcoholic syrup (orange juice, apple juice, tea) instead of brandy. The cake will be slightly less complex in flavour and won't keep quite as long, but it suits guests who don't drink, religious dietary needs, and cakes that will be served to children.
Can I order a fruit cake to take to family abroad?
Yes, rich fruit cake is one of the most-asked-for diaspora gifts. It travels well in cabin luggage and holds for weeks. We will box it for travel and label the brandy-fed status if needed for customs declarations.
Do you do a Christmas fruit cake list?
Yes. We start brandy-feeding from October for the December table. Order by mid-November to be on the Christmas list and to give the cake its proper maturing time.
